Investigators yesterday said the motive behind the sensational murder of Muhamuda Khanam Mitu could only be ascertained after the arrest of prime suspects Kamrul Sikder alias Musa and Kalu, who also happen to be police informers. Mitu, wife of former SP Babul Akther, was stabbed and shot dead near her home at GEC Circle in Chittagong by a group of motorcycle-borne assailants as she was escorting her son to a school bus on June 5.

Following this, Babul had filed a murder case with Panchlish police station. The case was later transferred to the Detective Branch (DB) of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) for investigation. Deputy police commissioner (DB) Md Kamruzzaman said they have questioned the victim’s husband and father in this regard, but could find no reason behind the crime. “We’re hopeful of arresting Musa and Kalu soon and ascertaining the motive from them,” he added.
Kamaruzzaman, also the investigating officer (IO) of the case, gave the statement after questioning Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain for around three hours yesterday.
Police had earlier questioned Babul on December 15.

“We talked with Mitu’s father regarding the details of the case. He told us all that he knew,” the IO said. “We’ve some development about the case after talking with Mosharraf and Babul. We’re now investigating their statements. But to dig out the whole matter, we’ve to first catch Musa,” he added.

On his part, Mosharraf said, “I requested the IO to find out the abettors as well as the motive for my daughter’s murder. I also requested him to arrest Musa and the other suspects whose names had cropped up in media reports.” Mosharraf also said there was no marital dispute between Babul and Mitu, and he did not suspect the husband as yet. He, however, mentioned: “If Babul has any involvement with Mitu’s murder, then, of course, the matter should be investigated. It should also be investigated if anyone else is involved.” Police sources linked with the investigation divulged that Babul had admitted to the police of knowing Musa and another suspect Ethesamul Haque Bhola for many years.
